As children move into the upper years of Key Stage 2, homework helps them develop independence, self‑organisation and confidence in the skills they need for secondary school. We ask families to support the following expectations each week.
📚 Reading – at least 3 times a week
- Children should read a minimum of three times each week, ideally aloud to an adult or followed by a short discussion.
- Reading can include school books, library books, fiction, non‑fiction or age‑appropriate texts from home.
- Please sign the reading record each time your child reads.
- Regular reading strengthens comprehension, vocabulary and critical thinking - key skills for upper KS2 and beyond.
🔡 Spellings
- Weekly spelling lists will be sent home.
- Children should practise these across the week using strategies such as look–cover–write–check.
- Spellings will be tested weekly in school to monitor progress.
🔢 Maths
- A weekly maths activity will be set to reinforce class learning.
- Tasks may include arithmetic practice, written methods, reasoning problems or practical, real‑life maths.
- Regular rehearsal of key number facts helps children build accuracy and confidence.
📝 Year 6 SATs Preparation (Year 6 only)
- In the lead‑up to SATs, Year 6 pupils may receive additional short tasks to support revision in reading, maths or grammar.
- These will be tailored to each child’s needs and may include:
- Targeted practice questions
- Times tables consolidation
- Short reading comprehension activities
- Grammar or punctuation revision
- All tasks will be designed to build confidence gradually, without overwhelming pupils.
🌟 How Families Can Support
- Encourage your child to complete homework in small, manageable chunks.
- Promote independence, but offer guidance if they are unsure.
- Keep learning positive - celebrate effort, perseverance and progress.
