Physical Education

Intent

At Witherley C.E Primary School, Physical education (PE) inspires children to participate in sports, as individuals, teams, competitive or just for fun. Through participation in PE, it allows our children to build character and help embed a variety of our School Values: perseverance, kindness, truthfulness and more. Witherley's aim is to provide opportunities for all our pupils to become physically active for sustained periods of time, grow in confidence, and to see sport as a lifelong habit with social benefits.

Through PE, children will develop knowledge and understanding of how they can lead healthy, active lives and the importance of this. Witherley deliver PE through dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities. The curriculum overview has been chosen to ensure that the National Curriculum requirements are fulfilled. Our PE curriculum ensures all children are exposed to a variety of different sports, and progress their knowledge, skills and vocabulary.

Implementation

Physical Education at Witherley C.E. Primary School provides inclusion, challenge and enjoyable learning for all. Lessons are implemented with all staff and external practioners, following a structured, progressive Primary PE scheme of work. A two-year long-term plan sets out the PE units, which are taught to our mixed-age classes (Years 1 - 6). We have a one-year long-term plan which ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum in our Early Years setting are fully met.

Beginning with EYFS and KS1 which focusses on developing fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, agility and coordination whilst participating in team games. This then allows KS2 children to build on their knowledge and skills applying these to sports specific lessons.  In addition to this, KS2 children develop an understanding of how to evaluate their performance by recognising their successes and when they need to improve. Our curriculum allows children to have experience of a wide range of sports. At Witherley, children have experience of sports such as: dodgeball, hockey, netball, rounders, cricket and football.

Teachers work collaboratively with external agencies (MHR Sports Services) to provide ongoing CPD opportunities for staff in each of the areas of PE. Organised lunchtime activities are available (Monday and Friday) available to all children, and encourage 30 minutes of additional physical activity.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. All children have the opportunity to run lunchtime sports clubs. Children are encouraged to, and they enjoy thinking of new clubs where they can stay active during lunchtimes. Children are also given the opportunity to compete in 'house competitions'. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development, but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills.

Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods: pupil discussions about their learning; assessment of standards, lesson visits, and media.

Witherley children are provided with a well-sequenced PE curriculum that allows them to learn and develop skills and then apply these in a variety of different sports, preparing them for the next stage in their education.

At Witherley, the opportunities provided allow pupils to become physically confident in ways that support their health and fitness and allow all children to be physically active for a sustained period of time. The high-quality PE curriculum inspires all pupils to participate in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities whilst building character and embedding values such as fairness and respect.
