Phase 6 Phonics

In Phase 6 Phonics the main aim for children is to develop their fluency as a reader and increase their accuracy when spelling. They will have already learnt the most often used grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) in the English language. Children will be able to sight-read a large number of words. When coming across an unfamiliar word, they have a range of strategies to decode them including their sounding and blending skills.

At this stage many children will be reading longer and less familiar texts independently and with increasing fluency. The shift from learning to read to reading to learn takes place and children read for information and for pleasure.

Children in Phase 6 phonics lessons will cover:

  • Suffix ending '-ing'
  • Suffix ending '-ed'
  • Suffix ending with a split digraph (silent e) for '-ing' and '-ed'
  • Suffix ending '-s'
  • Suffix ending '-es' after 'ss' 'x' 'sh' 'ch' 'tch'
  • Prefix 're-'
  • Prefix 'un-'
  • Prefix, root words and suffix.
