Welcome to Witherley's Foundation Stage 

Welcome to our Foundation Stage.  The Foundation Stage at Witherley is a busy, happy place to come to learn.  We are proud of all that we do and the great learning that takes place.

Foundation Stage

In Foundation Stage we teach, plan and assess using the DfE document 'Early Years Outcomes.' Please click on the link at the bottom of this section to take you to the document.


The Foundation Stage has 7 areas of learning.  The areas of learning are divided into The Prime Areas and The Specific Areas.


The Prime Areas:


  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal Social and Emotional Development


These areas are taught within the following specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Knowledge of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design


Characteristics of Effective Learning statements


The characteristics of effective learning in Foundation Stage are:


Playing and exploring
